Leisure

Speed Test. Well if you’ve ever used Speedtest.net then you’ll be at home with this app, simply tests your Internet speed, though it doesn’t cope very well with speeds above 10Mbps. Free

TV Guide. Pretty basic as well, gives you TV listings for a wide selection of channels, though if you have Sky+ then the Sky+ app is probably for you; let’s you set your box to record something away from home. £0.59

Tweetie. Hands down the best Twitter app I’ve used on the iPhone, it just does everything you’d want it to, and a whole lot more than Twitterrific used to let you, and it’s a lot cheaper than the Premium version. £1.79

ZumoDrive. You’ll need a ZumoDrive account but this app lets you access the files you’ve uploaded to your account, including the ability to stream music to your iPhone. Free, subscription from free

Games

Blocked. A simple, cheap puzzler, you’ve got to slide the blocks to get the blue block to the exit, gives your brain a good exercise and is easy to pick up and have a quick go as it saves all your progress. £0.59

Bowman. You’ve probably played the Flash version, there are two archers and you take turns firing arrows at each other, first to hit a few times wins, pretty simple, but the Bird Hunting mode adds more depth. £0.59

Flight Control. I love this game, your tasked with landing all the planes that are incoming on the right runway without any crashing, starts slow but gets pretty hectic quickly, great fun. £0.59

geoDefense. You have to survive wave after wave of ‘creeps’ by placing gun turrets strategically on their path, there are five different towers and they can all be upgraded. Good for a little bit of fun. There is also a free lite version available. £2.39

Well it’s that time of the week when I put the exploration of the past weeks to use and gather together some fine resource links for you to use in the week ahead. Maybe it’ll be just the thing you were looking for, or perhaps not, keep them bookmarked all the same.

When I say that these are bigger and better I mean that I’ve decided to use larger images so you can differentiate easier. I thought the Ten Good Links post was a bit hard to interpret because the images were the same size as the header image and made it too crowded. I’ve also gone with a new orientation with the link as a big header and a short paragraph afterwards.

exljbris Font Foundry

There are drawbacks to using free fonts, such as a limited character and glyph set but when it comes to exljbris fonts you can’t help but feel they should have a price tag. Amazing quality fonts with full character and glyph sets for free. Well okay some do have a price tag but it’s a miracle at all that some are free.

You can never have too many textures. A very true sentiment. So here’s some more textures to add to your library. Try some of my own if you ever need more to play around with.

I think AIR is a great, cross platform and loads of great apps built on it. Here’s a fine selection of applications with the web designer in mind. I would however say that Jing is a better alternative to WebKut.

Bit slow finding these but another brilliant release of high resolution paper textures. Great for a bit of background texture.

1000+ Free High Resolution Photoshop Brush Sets

Well you can’t really get much bigger than this collection, it’s huge and full of brilliant brushes. Now if only there was a way to download them all together.

Rust Brushes

I didn’t realise until recently that you have to go to the Freebies tab on PSDTuts for bonus stuff rather than it appearing in the main list. Here a nice set of brushes.

A mighty fine collection from Hongkiat of multi-monitor desktop wallpapers. Now that I’ve got one I don’t think I could go back to a single monitor, especially not what I had before now that I’ve witnessed the size of a 24″ Dell Monitor.

After redesigning the site PSDTuts launched a new Freebies section where users can submit their own freebies and it’s quickly becoming a very strong collection of brushes, textures and images.

Okay so a week late but I’ve been busy as I’ve already said. This post I’m going to looking at ways to alleviate boredom, through iPhone App Games. Now I’m a bit of a cheapskate so I haven’t actually bought any games but that doesn’t mean there aren’t some fun games for me to play for free.

So let’s have a look at them.

Well here is last weeks post if you want to look at the apps I thought were good for ‘productivity’, some weren’t that good at making you productive admittedly.

The links lead to the App in iTunes so they will ask your permission to launch iTunes.

Games

Bored at the bus stop? Meeting? Wherever you are you will always have a powerful portable games machine with you in the form of the iPhone, or the iPod Touch in my case.

Anaconda. Nothing like a good old game of Anaconda and I find this version a lot more controllable than the tilt to move variation. Great for passing some time.

Dactyl. The aim of this game is to test your reflexes, as the bombs go red you only have a small amount of time to tap them and defuse them. Great way to wake your brain up.

Hangman. This is my preferred version of Hangman, now with a two player mode as well, have played it quite a bit and not come across a repeated word. Simple and easy to use.

Sol Free. For a free game this certainly has a lot packed into it, though it uses the names that I’m not familiar with. Klondike Deal is Solitaire and Spiderette as far as I can tell is Spider Solitaire. Even with lots of cards it’s still easy to move and select them.

Sudoku. Another must have game (if you like Sudoku in the first place that is) is this free Sudoku game. Three difficulties and all the functionality needed including notes.

Tris. Sadly as I’ve come to write this it would seem that the Tetris game Tris has been taken down. Bit of a shame as it was an excellent Tetris game, perhaps that’s the reason it got taken down. Copyright infringement or whatever. Shame.

Freebies are great thing, they’re free and often with no rights attached so you can use them for whatever you like, whenever you like, commercial or personal they’re always there in glorious high resolution. That’s the best way for them to be so that’s how I’m going to deal with my freebies. Use them whenever, wherever, crediting is optional but always pleasant.

My first release will be of a series of some texture shots of whatever I could find when I went out snapping, there’s also a couple of Astrophotography star trail shots.

Okay so I lie a little bit, I don’t own an iPhone as I can’t afford the contract (in the same way I can’t afford a lot of things I just buy them anyway). I do however own an iPod Touch with 2.1 software which is just as good. Well not really, I really like the idea of 3G and GPS, maybe next year when my current contract expires.

Anyway, back on track, after seeing this post I thought it might be useful/interesting for some people to see what apps I’ve tried out. All of these are free.

Productivity

Loosely using the word here as I don’t really think a Remote for you music is going to help you be more productive, though you’ll waste less time skipping tracks perhaps.

Air Sharing. Better hurry this one, it’s only free as an introductory offer. A simple app that’s great for syncing files to and from your iPhone, basically makes your iPhone a removable hard drive. Course with only a maximum of 16 gigs on the iPhone you might not be storing too much on it, though there’s a 32 gig Touch.

IM+. So you’ve probably tried AIM and been disappointed by it, I don’t use AIM so I didn’t bother trying with it. This app does everything however, supports AIM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo and GTalk and the interface is pretty slick. I only use Messenger contacts with it but I’ve never had any problems with it.

Remote. If you use iTunes, which you chances are you have to, you should already have this app, should really be included as a standard app with the 2.0 software. Easy to use and does what it needs to do.

Simplify Media. Some people may find the space constraints a bit of hinderence for their huge music libraries but with Simplify Media you can take your entire library with you wherever you’re connected. Simplify Media just requires a desktop client be installed and running and it can stream any song to your iPhone.

To Do. To Do lists don’t need to be fancy, and neither is this app and that’s what’s so good about it. Push the plus, make a To Do, set the priority and arrange, perhaps add an extra note and you’re done. Then on the home screen a little indicator tells you you’ve got things to do like the waiting Mail indicator.

Twitteriffic. I used to think Twitterlator is better but after they sorted out the crashing bugs Twitteriffic is certainly easier to use and nicer to look at, and the ads are really not that obtrusive. Includes built in browser for any links.

I find when I’m working on University projects it’s key to have a large selection of resources ranging from textures and brushes to fonts and borders. And that’s precisely the aim of these posts; to bolster up your collection and selection of things you can use to add an extra dimension* to your work.

So here’s another selection.

21 Texture Packs is a list originally posted on SpeckyBoy.com and is a great find with a huge variety of different free textures. There’s Woods and Metals, Grunge and Retro Lights and a whole load of other textures at good resolutions

Vector CCTV Cameras are a freebie released by Chris Spooner on his Blog.SpoonGraphics site. They’re simple and perfect if you’re in the mood for a Hard-Fi-esque design.

On-Stage Vector Icon Set are a brilliant set of clearly defined icons and what’s even better is that they come with their original PSD files Vector ready. You can use them freely thanks to the co-operation between Smashing Magazine and their designers. Brilliant!

Grunge Photoshop Brushes, packing in a solid 74 brushes this is an excellent freebie pack again from Smashing Magazine. There is loads of great stuff in their freebie section.

TweetDeck is a useful tool for keeping your Twitters in check. I’m not sure how people can cope with following hundreds of people but this tool could probably prevent your mind melting in the process. Another great AIR application and therefore cross-platform.

There you go, another five useful things to have a play with.

* Please note you will find it difficult making extra dimensions, there are already quite a few available.

So I thought another way of seeing how the theme handles things is with a post containing various brushes, fonts, textures and other resources that I’ve come across whilst meandering around the Internet. It’s amazing how much high quality stuff people are prepared to put out for free use.

So without further ado here’s my first list.

Paper Textures by Bleeding-Dragon on dA. After seeing brown paper being put to such good use in the design of Blog.SpoonGraphics I found these textures to be pretty useful for some good old fashioned tactile design. Chris Spooner himself provides further high res brown paper textures on his blog.

Dirty Sprays Photoshop Brushes by David Leggett of Tutorial9. Among the numerous things over at Tutorial9 I chose these Dirty Spray brushes because I always like a bit of grungey work. The best bit about grunge work is overlaying the brushes to create a really rich texture and feel to the work.

Watercolour Photoshop Brushes on Bittbox. There are two sets there each with ridiculously high resolution watercolour brushes, he was really pushing the limits of Photoshop brushes when making these. Although I only threw the image together in a few seconds I’m sure there’s a really good use people can find putting these to. Bittbox is full of textures and brushes too.

World Map Vector by Mac Daddy Design. I found this thanks to Chris Spooner’s blog and it’s an amazingly detailed and useful resource and as a Vector it can go as big as you want and be edited to remove parts you don’t need. You can see the original post and find more map vectors.

Fontalicious make some excellent fonts, and they’re all free. You’ve got to have a wild streak to like some of them but they’re pretty funky and I like them. The above image was made with the help of this tutorial.
